and canals, Alappuzha or Alleppy is labelled as the Venice of the
East. Alappuzha, meaning the land between the sea and a network of
rivers falling into it, evokes a sense of romance and
beauty.Hemmed in by Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in the east,
Ernakulam in the north and Kollam on the south, the district opens
out onto the vast expanse of the Lakshadweep Sea on the west.
Devoid of mountains and hills, rivers like the Manimala, Pamba and
Achenkovil reign supreme in Alappuzha. While the Vembanad Lake
covers the area from Alappuzha to Kochi, the Kayamkulum Lake flows
through Kollam and Alappuzha.
This district is also notable for its numerous pilgrimage centres
that draw vast crowds on the festival days and also boasts of
having some of the best ayurvedic rejuvenation centres in Kerala.
This Venice of the East is also famous for its coir and carpet
industries in addition to featuring many other attractions of
tourist importance. There are at least six navigable canals in the
town. The Vadai Canal North Bank (VCNB) And South Bank (VCSB)
roads and commercial Canal North Bank (CCNB) and South Bank roads
run parallel to each other across the city. In the east, these
canal open to the Punnamada Kayal (backwaters), thereby connecting
the city to the mesh of backwater trials, which were once abuzz
with traders and travelers. Follow the VCNB and VCSB roads to
Alleppey's Boat Jetty on the Punnamada backwaters, crowded with
numerous houseboat and backwater operators. On the western side,
the canals end near the pier on Alleppey Beach. Traffic hurtles
over the canals are not open to tourists, but you can stand on the
edges of the traffic and watch the flight of birds, the occasional
water lilies and the brilliant hues of the tropical sky reflected
sometimes in the water. The names of the bridges convey an older,
gentler time, when there was very little traffic, and like the
disused pier, the bridges were designed for pedestrians. The
railway station is in south-west Alappuzha, near the Districts
Hospital.
